At the turn of the 20th century, early monument preservation and castle romanticism, imperial myth, historical local tradition and the commitment of civic associations came together in the preservation of the castle complex, which had been upgraded as an imperial palace. They still characterise the appearance of the castle museum today.

The heritage-protected Mylau Castle is the only almost completely preserved and largest castle complex in the Saxon Vogtland and is therefore an outstanding architectural monument. The collections of the cultural history museum in the castle are among the oldest museum collections in the Saxon-Vogtland region.
